Photo of Captain Dimitar Spisarevski, through the courtesy of MS Teodor Muhovski, from the MA Peyo Kolev’s site Lost Bulgaria

Today, December 20 marks exactly 66 years of unforgettable feat of Lt. Dimitar Spisarevski - Spaych first Bulgarian live warhead.
On this occasion I decided to put this short material. I found very few pictures of Spisarevski, so I supplement with other items - from Messerschmitt 109’s appliances, as he has flown, pilot equipment, insignia of honor , etc..

Biography
Dimitar Spisarevski was born in Dobrich on July 19, 1916.
After the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919, the city remains in the territories transferred to Romania. Due to intolerance of the Romanian father's occupation, family Spisarevski consistently moved in Lom, Belogradchik and finally Sofia. Here Dimitar Spisarevski ends the Second Boys' School / today 22nd school /.

After high school he joined the His Majesty Military School but was expelled and punished to serve in Yambol. For excellent behavior, several months after it was restored as a cadet in the school. When announced a competition for pilots, he was among the first standing as candidates for the new specialty.

Later, with the entire class was sent for training in Germany. There Spisarevski ends in Vernoyhen fighter pilot school in 1938. In the summer of 1943, with another Bulgarian pilot, is sent near the Channel, to watch Germany and pilots to assimilate the tactics of air combat.

December 20, 1943
On December 20, 1943 a powerful armada of U.S. bombers B-24 type "Liberator" target to be bombed once again, Sofia. Spisarevski Dimitar is one of the fighters on combat duty with the airport Bojurishte Messerschmitt Me-109G-2, which should intercept "Liberator"s before reaching the capital.

According combat log 3 / 6 exterminator y wing, which flies Spisarevski, the battle takes place as follows:
“Libarator”s fly to Sofia in the system wedges in threes, echeloned by back areas column, the end of which is lost to horizon.
Bulgarians formed a counter array, echelon ed by back areas column in fours. Fly against enemy aircraft altitude of 6000 meters. Wing has the task to tie battle with enemy fighters- two corpuses P-38 “Lightning”, and in the same time the other wing - 2 / 6 to strike bombers to compel them to drop their bombs outside Sofia.
The ratio of forces is at least 1:50 in favor of the aggressor.

Live Warhead
Spisarevski airplane fails to start, and he leaves a spare machine, with a delay after the other. This is his first real confrontation with the enemy in the sky of the motherland.

When he reach the bombers, the air battle has already begun.
Spisarevski slips out of two American fighters, refers to a group of 16 ”Libarator”s , and without stopping shooting in the leading machine. The bomber is split in the air, save only the caudal archer who is thrown together with a machine gun from the blast.

Spisarevski airplane fell on the heights above the village Pasarel , near Sofia. His body was found among the debris.
On the other side of the village lies stricken bomber.

For the removal of a four engine bomber he recognized three aerial victories.
There are different proofs for the direct collision with the bomber, but the only real witness is an American fighter pilot, who shortly afterward also was shot and captured.

This bombing of Sofia is one of the most devastating ever. 113 buildings were destroyed, of civilians have been killed 64 people and injured 93 others. Is also broken and the ring railway.

Dimitar Spisarevski produced posthumously to the rank of captain. He was buried in Central Sofia Cemetery, Alley of the Pilots.

Since being discovered opponent of communist ideas, during the socialism, Spisarevski name is suppressed.
After 1989, the feat is taken out of oblivion.

In Sofia’s “Iskar” district in the name of the character is called boulevard.

Bears the same name and the street in the village Pasarel, that leads to the place of Spisarevski’s death. The plaque was affixed at the beginning of the street.

Poem “When You Are On The Bottom”, by Bulgarian author Damyan Damyanov

When you are on the bottom of the hell
When you are most sad and miserable
From the scalding coals of the sorrow
Make yourself a ladder and go out
When the world is growing dark before your eyes
And everything swam in these two eyes
Create a ladder and come up
When you are been crashed by a maze
And you are wall in four walls
From all your crashed roads
Make a new road and go on
Thorny and evil is the puzzle of life
On a cross it crucifies our souls
You have lost everything, do not lose yourself
The only way for you to decide
